The name she chose for her middle name, "Chrishell", is an evocative term developed from the bizarre circumstances of her birth. Her mother had her baby in the Shell station, and Chris assisted with the delivery. Strause says that the gossip surrounding her birth is false. She opened up about her mother's car issues and then walked into an auto gas station. She enrolled in pre-labor while she was at the station. The attendant in the car assisted her in getting to a hospital. Strause was delivered in an in-hospital. Her mother didn't know that she was pregnant. Strause broke up with her biological dad who was half Japanese and half Spanish. Jeff is her stepson. Chrishell Strause missed middle school for a whole year due to the fact that she was living in the tent. Strause revealed her experiences of hiding her identity from her classmates by describing how she was washing her hair in the rivers and applying for food stamps. Her parents "struggled with mental and addiction health" and she joined the Worldwide Church of God when she was 10 years old. Her mother never had a steady job and Strause describes her as a free spirit and self-righteous.
